Last week, I was lucky enough to visit ‘Goorin Bros’ (link) Georgetown store, a fourth-generation, San Francisco-based family-owned company of bold hatmakers since 1895. Cassel Goorin, an artist and craftsman, sold his first custom made hats from a horse-drawn cart in 19th century Pittsburg, Pa.
Cassel passed along the hat making trade to his two sons, Alfred and Ted, who took over the business in 1921 as the Goorin Bros. and then relocated the company to San Francisco in 1949. Today, Goorin Bros celebrates their 118 year anniversary with 29 retail locations in North America after a major expansion campaign in 2007 when Cassel’s grandson and fourth generation hatter Ben took over as CEO.
Each Goorin Bros. retail location is furnished with antique furniture and mirrrso to channel the 19th century ambience into their world of hats. The Georgetown location I visited was adorned with vintage pieces such as ostentatious chandeliers, authentic rugs, antique type writers, suitcases, and black-and-white photographs from the original Goorin Bros. I also noted how friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable the staff was; each employee taking on their own unique chicness. As far as the hats go, they are impeccably designed with impressive stitching, patchwork, special materials, neat shapes, and more.
Goorin Bros’ creative and authentic designs offer a vintage twist, which in turn has created a nationwide and loyal customer base, as the hats are collected by fans and sported by celebrities from every arena, including entertainment, sports, and politics.
Please join the Grand Opening of Goorin Bros in Georgetown Thursday, June 26th between 6PM-8PM. Food will be provided by Pie Sisters of Georgetown (mini pie bites in various flavors) and drinks will be provided by Green Hat Distillery of DC (will be serving Gin Rickeys – made of gin, Perrier water and lime.) Jason Trawick and the Common Good from DC will be the entertainment. If you are in the DC area, you should definitely check out Gooring Bros.
