Into The Wide – Delta Spirit
By Gia Vescovi-Chiordi
Delta Spirit [link] has always been a ‘goose-bump’ band. They effortlessly channel an overarching, sweeping pictorial of Americana with unabashedly straightforward yet sensitive lyrics and an expansive indie intuition. It may seem a little hot-blooded at times, but the band’s bread and butter has always been zealous passion layered over exuberant sound.
The Southern California-turned-Brooklyn based heritage rockers have put forward their fourth full length studio album Into The Wide (Dualtone Records), somewhat more cinematic departure from previous efforts. After a year of penning the album in a cramped, cavelike room in Brooklyn, multi-instrumentalist Kelly Winrich warns the record is their ‘moodiest’ yet. This sentiment rings true as the claustrophobic conditions shine through to lend a gloomier tone, however the band never fails to inject a dose of affirmation into each track regardless of how bleak the subject matter may be. Though they’ve lost a bit of the bluesy bite they’re so well known for, they substitute it with an affecting, more fulfilled take. Singer Matt Vasquez’s vocals have always been like honey over gravel, and he retains that sensibility with a polished hardiness this go round.
‘Language of the Dead’ has a spirited feel to it, catchy and chorale right from the outset. I’m unapologetically reminded of older History From Below era Delta Spirit, but they breathe new life into a classic form, saving us from redundancy. Strong percussion and subtle keys pave a solid foundation for Vasquez to warble over. It’s a well formed track.
A tinkling interlude just over a minute comes in after the rollicking anthem ‘Patriarch’. A somewhat eerie and slightly heartrending pace breaker that serves as an unexpected palate cleanser, it could be conceived as achingly sad or willfully hopeful depending on your mood. This is always an indicator of the handle a group of musicians have over their sound; when they can spread a song over the emotional spectrum like a salve. You could leave it on repeat and not even notice.
‘Interlude’ flows into ‘War Machine’, a measured ode that immediately greets the listener vocally without being jarring, this track is nearly a lullaby that could be considered a trick outro. ‘The Wreck’ comes in as the actual closer, heavy with keys and crystal clear vocals. Each song was formulated with the bands’ reputation for exuberant and clamorous live performances in mind, and it’s not hard to see how well these will translate in person. It may be moody through your headphones (which is alright!), but with a spirited crowd on all sides Into The Wide is guaranteed to be exhilarating.
