Malena’s Vintage Boutique
By Serenat Kivilcim
Last Saturday, I visited Malena’s beautiful vintage store nestled among the quaint restaurants and shops in downtown West Chester, Pa. Appropriately set in a bustling college town, Malena’s is a popular destination for avid vintage hunters, featuring a wide variety of one-of-a-kind vintage styles from the 20’s – 80’s. The staff is extremely helpful, friendly, and warm and the entire store is carefully organized and cheerfully lit, unlike the typical cluttered and musty atmosphere of other thrift stores.
A Malena’s customer ranges in age and style, offering a fresh experience to all types of people. It is not unusual for a mother and daughter to shop here together and both finding unique treasures. The price points also vary from $10 sale jewelry to more expensive designer pieces by Hermes and Chanel.
Malena’s love of vintage clothing and jewelry fuels her passion to always offer unique pieces found no where else. She started collecting at 12 years while perusing thrift shops with her mom. As she got older, she realized that vintage pieces seemed to last longer and fit the body better, relics from a time when people really cared about the clothing they made, and that mentality has clearly reflected in her store.
Feel free to sell your pieces too! She purchases items everyday and from anyone, from massive designer collections to a few trinkets of jewelry. Her forte is dresses and jewelry, but any women’s items from before 1980 are welcomed and encouraged.
“Opening the shop at 23 was a challenge. The vintage market has changed so much over the years, there wasn’t even social media back then! The difference in my store from other boutiques or online sellers is that I have an education in Fashion Design, I can easily date pieces and determine their size and fit accurately.” – Malena
