Qualia’s Triptych

Qualia’s Triptych

By Dani Kowalczyk

Qualia was pitched to me as ambient, post-rock and I have to admit I was intrigued. Some of my favorite bands include Beach House, Sigur Ros, and Tycho. This wave of experimental and moving melodies that seem to speak to something greater, speak to your soul and calm the noise of life around you. His most recent EP, Triptych, actually embarks on a more Muse, Arcade Fire and Imagine Dragons feel with an up beat tempo and enthusiastic lyrics and vocals. I was surprised to hear this style from Qualia since his previous work was much more instrumental.

Michael Hazani, the mastermind known as Qualia, has been a semi-finalist for two years running in the International Songwriting Competition. Additionally, he’s won the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Competition to boot. There is certifiably no reason to doubt this man’s genius. Off of his latest album, Triptych, there are three tracks (of which I am immensely appreciative), and three tracks that were wholeheartedly developed with intent and effect. His second, “Guillotine”, is my favorite with a bit of a deeper, lower sound in comparison to “Presque Vu” and “Tell Me A Story.” Nevertheless, these lighter, more fun and lifting tracks from Seattle based mastermind Qualia are worthy of a listen.
