Yuna Show Review

Yuna Show Review

By Harriet Kaplan

Homeland pride, love and family were on Yuna’s mind as she spoke to the sold-out audience with sincerity, affection, love and playful abandon throughout her recent triumphant show at the El Rey. The audience clapped often, cheered and yelled out song requests to Yuna. In great spirits, Yuna gave a shout out to her Malaysian “sisters” in the crowd putting the spotlight on them as well as herself, explaining “we are good looking and attractive.” Yuna also offered hope and inspiration encouraging people to believe and follow their dreams saying she left Malaysia five years to pursue her own. In that time, singer/songwriter Yuna has become an international pop star known for personal and intimate material that focuses on empowerment and motivation. Her sound and style is combination of adult alternative, acoustic music, folk rock, contemporary R&B and indie pop. Yuna has now released eight albums, including the newest LP, “Chapters,” which was very much on the classy, elegant and poised artist’s mind on the El Rey. She debuted live a few of the numbers from Chapters that were lovely and melodic. With each song she sung, the set got stronger, and her voice became more full-bodied, growing incredibly powerful and just soared. Jhene Aiko joined Yuna for a fun and high-energy duet harmonizing on “Used To Love You.” This engaging uptempo song was one of the many musical highlights performed during the show. Yuna delivered a wonderful finale on the last stop of a successful tour and her enthusiastic, dedicated fans couldn’t get enough.
