Hailing from the depths of New Jersey – The Fuzz are currently heating up the music industry with their catchy tunes & their undeniable stage presence. The female fronted, power coupled – Chev & Chris are on everyone’s radars lately. Equally important, it takes 6 people to make ‘Sugar. Spice. And everything nice.’ If you are ready to experience the definition of Rock N’ Roll, then be sure to check out these links below, where you can stream their grunge infused melodies. How did you get into music?
We all started at a young age, as soon as we could! It’s scary how much we all have in common; we grew up listening to our parents’ music (everything from 50s doo-wop and 70s funk and blues to metal and grunge) as well as all our generation’s current stuff (rap/hip-hop, boybands, post-hardcore, neo-soul, hard rock), so we all have a giant collective encyclopedia of influences. Some of us went to school for music, but all of us have that same obsessive ear and natural instinct for writing riffs and creating soundscapes.
How did the band start?
We’ve been a band since 2012, so we’ve got a pretty deep origin story with a lot of amazing former members who have moved on to new chapters but really helped shape our sound. The main push came after Chevonne went on season 3 of The Voice. Some of us, including our bass player Mike, had already been in a NJ cover band together years ago, and when she got back from the show, she convinced everyone to come back and start a brand new original project. Our singer Chris was the toughest one to convince even though he was dating and living with Chevonne! Our drummer Nick came in right out of music school, and we brought our guitarist Joey on after a few years of playing out locally together. Our first nights writing as a band at Chris and Chevonne’s old apartment involved many drinks and midnight shenanigans. It was good vibes from the jump.
How did you come up with the band name?
We were recording demos in the recording studio at Nick’s college, and we had a bunch of whiskey and weed hidden all over the room. A public safety officer came in, sniffed out exactly NONE of our contraband, but kicked us out anyway claiming we didn’t have permission to be there. (We did.) As we were leaving, he yelled “If you guys aren’t out of here in ten minutes, I’m calling the cops!” We were all like, aren’t you the cops? Then we all started mockingly whispering “Oooooh, THE FUZZ is gonna get us…” and that was that.
What makes your music different/unique from other artists?
Usually the first element people notice is the fact that we have two frontmen, Chris and Chevonne. It’s great because they each bring a completely opposite but complementary energy. We’re also super proud of our 100% collaborative writing process – because of our diverse influences, we think the music comes out as a really cool and unique hybrid of a lot of genres and musical auras. Our main purpose while writing is to make sure that everyone in the band is stoked with the songs we create; in our minds, the extra effort to create harmony amongst all our sensibilities makes a really cohesive and unified sound.
What is something you want your fans to know about you?
Our live show is fucking wild! Whatever you hear on our records, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When you come out to see us, we take you on a full-on journey…it’s fun, it’s ragey, it’s sexy, it’s totally raucous! Coming out to see us live is an absolute must. Also, watch out for our new EP, Pretty Demolition, coming later this fall!
Where is your dream place to tour?
Anywhere and everywhere! Any city that loves live music. We recently toured the Midwest, and we fell in love with the people packing out those bars to capacity and buying every band’s merch. The Midwest was a unicorn for us, and we’d love to discover more places around the world whose locals get as excited as those folks do about new and upcoming acts. As far as our personal bucket lists go for sightseeing and culture, we’d love to tour the west coast of the US, the UK (especially London), and Japan.
Who is your dream artist to tour with?
Foo Fighters. Janelle Monae would be really rad too.
How would you describe your music?
Alive! Riffy! Gender bending! Provocative.
If you can describe your music using a food, what would it be and why?
It’s a burrito! It’s got tons of different delicious and satisfying elements rolled up into one glorious, portable concoction. It’s also spicy, and if you go all in on it, it’s gonna hurt your ass the next morning! 😉
What advice would you give your 13 year old self?
Whatever it is you care about, dream about, and makes you want to get up in the morning: stick with it. Your instincts are right. Your interests are valid and worth pursuing. The sky is the limit if you put in work and ignore the critics and detractors. And above all, own your individuality and be proud of who you are! Fuck everyone who isn’t on board with your you-ness; prance on!!!
Stay tuned for The Fuzz’s new music and show dates!
